Strategic Planning

A Clear Direction Changes Everything.

Stakeholder discovery, facilitated planning workshops, and mission-centered strategic plans that give your organization clear direction for the next 1, 3, and 5 years.

Most nonprofits don't lack passion. They lack a shared map.

Your team cares deeply about the mission. Your board wants to help. But without a shared strategic direction, even the most committed people end up pulling in different directions — toward the loudest funding opportunity, the most urgent crisis, or whatever the board member with the strongest opinion said last meeting.

The result is an organization that runs on heroic effort instead of sustainable systems. That's not a leadership failure. It's a direction problem.

A decision-making system built around what matters most.

The plans that actually get used don't sit on a shelf. They become a filter for every decision — so your whole organization knows what to say yes to, what to say no to, and why.

Phase 1 — Discovery & Assessment

Approximately 3 weeks

WHAT THIS IS

Before we can map where you're going, we need to understand where you actually are — not the version that lives in the annual report, but the honest operational reality.

We conduct a comprehensive review of your organization, gathering input from across your team and board through individual questionnaires and interviews. We review source documents, learn your history, and identify the consistent themes, internal misalignments, and strategic implications that should shape your plan.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Collection and review of source documents (previous strategic plans, annual reports, program materials)

  • Organizational site visit or tour

  • Pre-work questionnaire distributed to all staff and board members

  • Individual stakeholder interviews

  • Written summary of findings, themes, and strategic implications

Phase 2 — Strategic Planning Workshop

Half-day (approximately 3 hours)

WHAT THIS IS

This is where the real work happens. We facilitate an interactive workshop with your board and staff leadership that turns stakeholder input and organizational data into a shared strategic direction.

We don't arrive with an agenda that was built for someone else's organization. We design your workshop around what your findings actually surfaced — and we facilitate it in a way that builds genuine alignment, not just polite agreement.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Purpose and organizational identity exploration

  • Values alignment and assessment

  • Review of stakeholder questionnaire and interview insights

  • Vision and risk mapping — 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years

  • Development of strategic priorities, goals, and measures of success

  • Framework for accountability and implementation planning

Format

Board and staff leadership participate together. Facilitated by MPC. Held at your location or a location of your choice.

WHAT THIS IS

We take everything from Phases 1 and 2 and build a comprehensive strategic plan that's clear, usable, and designed to actually guide your work.

This isn't a generic template with your logo on it. It reflects your organization's specific context, capacity, and priorities — drafted with your input, reviewed with your leadership, and finalized for board approval.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • Full draft of strategic plan with goals, measures, and timelines

  • Review and feedback process with leadership and board

  • Final revisions and delivery of completed plan

  • Implementation plan with accountability framework and timeline

Phase 3 — Plan Development & Delivery

Approximately 2 weeks

Sometimes a strategic plan is the thing your board has been missing all along.

Many board challenges — role confusion, disengagement, conflict between board and staff — trace back to a single root cause: no shared direction.

When everyone is pointed at the same goals, governance gets cleaner. Board members know what they're accountable for. Staff know what success looks like. The ED stops managing competing visions and starts leading toward one.

If you've been wrestling with board dynamics and wondering whether governance training is the answer, it's worth having a conversation first. Sometimes it is. Sometimes a strategic plan does more.

What You Walk Away With

When we're done, you have four things your organization can actually use:

A Summary of Findings

A written record of what stakeholders said, where alignment exists, and where it doesn't — the honest picture that informed your plan.

A Facilitated Planning Process

A workshop your team has been through together, which means shared language, shared priorities, and shared ownership of what comes next.

A Comprehensive Strategic Plan

Clear direction for the next 1, 3, and 5 years — with goals, success measures, and timelines that connect your vision to daily decision-making.

An Implementation Framework

An accountability structure so the plan doesn't stop at the board vote. Who owns what, by when, and how you'll know you're on track.
